Love Is All That Matters
Words and music by Katherine Milam and Cliff Rubin
Verse
He had a gold watch, been in his family for 3 generations
She had a lush head of hair came down just below her knees
They lived in the projects, struggled every month to pay their bills
But there was something about them you wouldn’t believe they had such little means
Chorus
We can live like love is all that matters
We can give like we’ve got an endless supply
We can have what’s best about the things we’re after
We can remember we choose, we decide
Verse
She wanted to buy him a gold chain for his gold watch
But, the day before Christmas didn’t have enough
One last look in the mirror before running out the door
To the wig shop, where she let down her hair and asked, “How much for?”
Chorus
Bridge
She put the gift on the table, hoped he’d see it before her curls
But, the shock on his face caught her out of place, she cried out like a little girl
Verse
“I did it for you.” She gave him the present. “It’ll grow back soon.”
He handed her the beautiful combs she’d seen on 5th Ave.
“I pawned the watch for these, guess we’ll wait for our gifts to be used.”
They fell into each other’s arms on the couch and laughed because they knew
Chorus

[…] I kept the instrumentation sparse on this, so nothing gets in the way of the story. Click here to listen:Love Is All That Matters. […]

There won’t be a dry eye in the house when you next play that song in public. The song definitely touches the heart, and speaks to the economic adversity many are experiencing today. I especially liked the mandolin - nice touch. Way to go!

Beautiful message. In a world so possessed by thinking they have to have lots of money, it is nice to be reminded that money itself is not everything. Love really IS all that matters! Lovely song!

It’s very beautiful, full of deep feelings.
The story is very nice. I love the vividness of the guitar and the subtle instrument in the background.
Nothing to change. My friend loves your voice.
PEACE

Cliff, it is a nice song but wouldn’t call it great. The marriage of melody and lyric isn’t always a perfect fit but may not totally matter but could be stronger if it did. Nice adaption of the old O’Henry thing. The last line of the chorus was a little confusing to me at first “We remember”? what do I remember?? Then I think I got it for we have to remember that we can decide etc. At least I think that’s what you mean..it wasn’t clear at first. Also, the bridge builds to where she’s reached a point of surprise but then the first 2 lines of the verse are her giving him the chain. IMHO the bridge should build to right where she sees the combs as a bridge in any song MUST be the high point. Here it raises the song but then goes back to her giving him the chain which she of course knows about. All in all it is a very good song but at this point would not call it “great”
Enjoyed listening and hope you have success w/ it. Take care and good writing

I liked this song, my teenagers and I were talking about this story last week. I also liked the guitar and mandolin, it was just the right amount of music for the song. It carried the lyrics very well.
Keep up the good work. This one should be on the CD for sure!
